- The English East India Company started as a trading company in 1600, but over time, it slowly gained power by making deals with Indian rulers and building its own army, which helped it control large parts of India.
- It made huge profits by trading goods like spices, cotton, silk, and tea, but also caused harm by taking resources from India and using local people for labor while making strict rules that favored British interests.
- By the mid-1800s, many Indians were unhappy with the Company’s rule because of unfair taxes, land policies, and disrespect for Indian culture, which led to the Revolt of 1857; after that, the British government took direct control of India.
