- The Mountbatten Plan was announced on 3rd June 1947 and proposed the partition of British India into two independent dominions: India and Pakistan.
- It allowed provinces like Punjab and Bengal to be divided based on religious majority, and princely states were given the choice to join either country or remain independent.
- The plan led to the Indian Independence Act of 1947, which came into effect on 15th August 1947, ending British rule in India.
